A couple of days ago I started using Google’s web browser, Chrome.  First of all, I must say that I am impressed, really really impressed with it.  However, mailto links didn’t seem to be working.  Naturally, I googled…

Just about every single result from my searching was about how to have Chrome use Gmail to open mailto links.  Pfft.  C’mon people, email is a text thing, not a web thing.  When will you learn?  I wanted a SXEmacs frame to pop up with a Gnus mail buffer loaded with the details from the mailto link.  I can do that with Firefox.  I can do that with just about any mozilla based browser.  So I should be able to do it in Chrome, right?

Yes of course I can.  Here’s how…

  1. Get xdg-utils if you don’t already have it.
  2. Get my mozmail.el which is in the XEmacs “net-utils” package.
  3. Configure mozmail.el (there are instructions in the file itself and you can skip everything about making changes to your browser)
  4. Start Chrome like this:  BROWSER=mozmail.sh google-chrome

And believe it or not, that’s it.

Help me write more great articles like this, fuel my mojo with a coffee!

  1. To make this an even more elegant solution:

You’ll probably find that google-chrome is a shell script pointing to /opt/google/bin/chrome … in which case you’ll be able to edit the shellscript accordingly! :)

I don’t see that as “elegant” at all.

What happens the next time you upgrade Chrome? You’ll have to re-edit every time. My solution requires no edits or changes to anything. Once you set it up, it works, and doesn’t stop working simply because you upgrade your browser.

  2. Hi Steve,

I have had my wave account and as such I started to use Chrome, I too was initally impressed but I still prefer firefox, watching some videos is impossible in chrome, but I am sure they will sort this in time.

    Good post Steve

      Hi James!

Great to see you back, mate. Yeah, Chrome is still lacking in a few places (I really miss my sidebar), but sadly Firefox isn’t an option for me. It doesn’t run here at all, the pig crashes before it even starts. :-(

BTW, I’m `jackalx@googlewave.com’ on Google Wave, feel free to add me to your contacts.
